PILATES

What is it?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on posture, balance, alignment strength and flexibility. It’s suitable for men and women of all ages and fitness levels.

How it started
. . . . . . . . .

Joseph Pilates was born near Dusseldorf in 1880 and dedicated his entire life developing what we know today as Pilates.

His philosophy was on the integration of the mind and body and his techniques were a combination of physical and mental conditioning.

Today, many of the exercises that he originally devised are considered as “advanced”. This was due to the nature of his clients who mostly came from professional dancing, gymnastic backgrounds, as well as soldiers who were used to achieving high levels of fitness and flexibility.

His original exercises are generally modified to ensure complete safety but the principles and philosophy remain.

Intelligent Excercise
. . . . . . . . .

There is no debate that the Pilates approach can work wonders. When applied correctly, it will make you look, feel and move better. Through proper repetition of exercises, you gradually and progressively acquire a natural rhythm, strength and co-ordination. Not to mention the time out that your mind gets whilst practising and focussing on your own body.

True Pilates is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace and skill that will be reflected in the way that you go about your everyday life.

Physio’s, chiropractors, osteos and doctors often recommend Pilates as part of their clients rehabilitation programme. Pilates differs from many traditional exercise programmes as it focuses both on strengthening weak muscles and stretching tight areas. Its focus is on good posture and alignment and is often quoted as intelligent exercise.
