Stretching decreases muscles stiffness and helps to increase the range of movement – this may also slow the degeneration of joints
May help to reduce the risk of injury:
A flexible muscle is less likely to become damaged by a sudden movement – there will be more elascticity which will allow the joints to move more easily without restriction
Stretching after exercise or sitting for long periods at your desk or steering wheel will prevent stiffness by lessening the shortening effect of muscles that can lead to aches and soreness
Improves posture:
Think about sitting at your desk or working on your smart phone or driving for long periods – the muscles across the front of the shoulders become shortened, drawing the shoulders forward and rounding the shoulders and the upper back – by lengthening or opening up these muscles it allows the shoulders to sit back where they naturally should be without creating the rounding effect – being aware of this; sitting up straight intermittently and drawing your shoulders back will go some way to balancing the effect
Enhances muscle relaxation:
Chronically tense muscles can cut off their own circulation which means that essential supplies of oxygen and nutrients are limited to these muscles – by keeping the muscles moving and lengthened and relaxed, means better supplies of oxygen and nutrients to keep your muscles and joints healthy
Stretch before exercise and it will prepare your body, allowing it to loosen up and become better able to withstand the impacts of your chosen activity
Decreases the risk of lower back pain
By keeping your ham strings, hip flexors and the muscles that attach to your pelvis and lower back especially, lengthened and flexible, the stress to the lower back will be much reduced therefore reducing the incidence of lower back pain in general terms
